How much is all of this worth, if anything?
July 24, 2009
Hello! My mother has a boat and two outboards they’re considering donating to just get rid of. Before they do this, I’d like to know if any of this is worth selling and if so, how much we should ask for.
What she has:
Mercury 9.9 outboard (roughly 1987). Great condition, always stored indoors. Hasn’t been run in about 10+ years.
Mercury 70 outboard (also, roughly 1987). Condition unknown, left outside uncovered attached to boat.
Boat: 1987 17′ Arima Sea Chaser . Condition is less than good. It’s been left outside for about 10 years, uncovered.
I have pictures you can view here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/rogerdana/
Thanks for your input!

The 87 stored indoors is not in great condition. After not being run for 10 or more years, all of the gaskets are dried out. The rest of them are weather exposed on top of that problem. If you are lucky, you might find someone willing to take a chance and take them off your hands. If not, you will have to pay someone to take them away.
Assuming you have ownership papers on all of them, start by putting in a “take it all, $500 OBO” ad.
Well if I was in your area (have to be in your country first! oh well) anyway. If I was near you I’d look at them. There’s got to be at least $500 for the lot even just for the trailer (springs look shot) and the 9.9. The engines will need fully reconditioned fuel systems, new water pump impellors, spark plugs etc. before even attempting to start them, but they will probably be O.K. There is rust and corrosion visible in the 9.9 (the hose clamps around the upper exhaust relief outlet on the leg holding some sort of cover and tube are new to me – any feedback on what that is?) The hull – well who knows without a good look, if it’s had a decade of freshwater it might have some real issues. Cables will probably be seized, might have electrical faults, hopefully any water was able to drain right through. But I’ve seen and fixed up worse. All going to depend on how handy the person is that gets it – there will be a lot of work there.
Might be a good project.
You are better off donating eveything. Put a value of $500 and hope they take it.
Go to “angel boats” web site (a donation site) and see what they have for sale and how much- if they can get that much, that’s what it’s worth.
Found them predominately on E-bay
