Do celebrities ever do anything useful with their money?

I’m constantly hearing about these rich celebrities all the time buying ridiculous things like huge diamonds, huge boats, jets, $5000+ shoes… blah blah blah. And if they aren’t out blowing money on useless crap they are throwing ridiculously expensive parties or out spending money on drugs.
My question is this:
Do celebrities ever spend their ridiculous salaries on anything useful? Like maybe purchasing solar panels and wind turbines to reduce our dependence on foreign oil? Or maybe donate some money towards intelligence agencies so they find terrorists before they fly planes into buildings… or do something worse like a nuclear attack (which by the way apparently there is a 30-50% chance of a nuclear attack occurring on US soil in the next 10 years **ref: ABC news, New Hampshire Debates, Jan 5, 2007)
I’m just wondering, how much do celebrities care about the world?

cameron diaz and leonardo dicaprio buy lots of toyota prius if that helps…and Brad,Angelina adopt kidz?
Sure, many of them use their money to further thier favorite charities or social issues. Oprah for example, built a school in S. Africa (why would she not build one in S. Carolina evades me)
I understand your frustration, but your categorization is too broad- of course SOME celebrities do responsible socially conscious things with their money, but most of them aren’t as rich as you’d think- for every actor or actress that get 10 million a picture, there are thousands that basically make a living wage. And remember, we don’t have celebrities to take care of us, we have our families, our friends, and out government (police, firemen, etc.) So be the change you want to see, and let other people waste their time/lives/money. And if you don’t like what they’re doing? Don’t support them!
A lot of them do good stuff, they just don’t want it announced. They like the low profile. Sandra Bullock donated a mil to the tsunami or Katrina, which started a friendly competition among celebrities to donate to tragedies… Brad Pitt is practically rebuilding Katrina, Leo Caprio does all kindsa Al Gore type stuff…. they’re not ALL bubbleheads hell bent on outdoing each others cars, bags & useless homes.
Yes they have to pay millions for security to keep crazy fans away from them and there family’s.
Thay are not all like Paris ( dumb ) Hilton.
